Building Britain’s Canals

Channel 5, 8pm

Dan Jones’s documentary makes for fascinating viewing as he examines Britain’s most iconic waterways, beginning with the 152-mile Grand Union Canal, which runs up the backbone of the country. It was built at the height of the Industrial Revolution, a task which pushed even the greatest engineering minds of the time to their limits, including pioneers such as James Brindley, the man behind Britain’s first commercial canal, and William Jessop, one of the people responsible for creating the link between Birmingham and London.

Lethal Weapon

STV, 9pm

The sound of wedding bells and police sirens combine as crimebusting duo Riggs and Murtaugh attend Leo Getz’s surprise wedding – with Murtaugh as Leo’s best man. However, the duo soon find themselves at the heart of the action when fiancee Nina disappears at a key moment – with a very large sum of money apparently in her possession.

Cruising with Jane Mcdonald

Channel 5, 9pm

You could have heard a few chins hit the floor when this series won a Bafta a few weeks ago. As a rule of thumb, not many Channel 5 documentaries take home gongs from the British Academy. In fact none of them did – until this year. However, given the fun mix of travelogue, celebrity banter and easy-on-the-eye locations, there was little wonder the eponymous entertainer won over the masses and a few critics. In the second of a two-parter, we see what happened when Ms Mcdonald explored the wonders of Australia and New Zealand.

Tracey Breaks the News

BBC 1, 9.40pm

It’s a brave comedian that tries to impersonate anyone, because as brilliant as the make-up team are at the BBC, it takes more than some clever wigs and prosthetics to capture the essence of a character. Tracey Ullman knows this only too well, but then again she’s been doing this sort of thing for decades, either on home turf with shows such as Three of a Kind, or in the States. The latest chapter of her short-lived series draws to a close this week, and lined up in her comedy cross hairs are Jeremy Corbyn, Rupert Murdoch, wife Jerry, Angela Merkel, Theresa May, Michael Gove and Jacob Rees Mogg. With solid support from the likes of Ben Miller and Liam Hourican, this is bound to raise a few giggles after a hard week.

Dale Winton’s Florida Fly Drive

Channel 5, 10pm

There’s a chance to see the much-missed presenter begin the second leg of his 1,500-mile journey in Miami, at Casa Casuarina, the boutique hotel that was formerly the home of Gianni Versace until his death in 1997. The fashion designer’s influence is visible throughout, from leopardprint cushions to the swimming pool made out of thousands of 24-carat-gold tiles.
