Life on Mars would be like the Wild West, says Brian Cox

-

PROFESSOR Brian Cox says despite being an expert on space he wouldn’t want to live there – until there are “hotels and vineyards”.

Mr Cox, 50, says living on planets such as Mars would be horrendous and dangerous.

The astrologist and physicist said colonising other planets could be possible one day due to their not being much space left on Earth.

But he compared Mars to the 19th century American frontier Wild West and said he wouldn’t want to be a pioneer and move there himself.

Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Mr Cox said: “I think expansion is good and I think we will expand outwards because there’s not much room left on this planet.

“But that’s a whole different idea. It’s not about scientific discovery it’s about a frontier and all the benefits that come from operating as a civilisation on a frontier which we have lost on the Earth because there is no frontier left.

“There is no other planet we can go to apart from Mars, you can’t go to Jupiter or Mercury or Venus so if we want to go somewhere it has to be Mars and everything’s there that you need.”

But he added: “I’m not going to go there until there’s vineyards and hotels and things.

“It would be horrendous, it would be like the western frontier.”
