Fiddler on the hoof
MUSICIAN and composer Daniel Safford, from Philadelphia plays the Il Mare violin, which is made from driftwood, on Portobello beach, Edinburgh, ahead of his performance at Scotland’s International Marine Conference in Glasgow this week.
Steve Burnett crafted the instrument from a poplar log he found on a beach in East Lothian. It was first unveiled last summer.
The violin, which Mr Burnett has named Il Mare (Italian for the sea), is inscribed inside with the words “A voice from, and for the sea”.
The conference will focus on actions to protect the marine environment.
