1 After the release of the movie, film fans went in search of the village with the red phone box, only to find there wasn’t one – it was a film prop. Pennan villagers, with the help of BT, put in a real one to please visitors. The phone box, right, has attracted so many visitors that it has been registered as a listed building.

2 The beach that featured in many beautiful shots does not belong to Pennan and can be found in Morar, on the west coast. A cardboard church was created near Camusdarac­h Beach to make both locations look the same for filming.

3 Mark Knopfler’s debut soundtrack was a huge success and sold better than the film itself. Paisley singersong­writer Gerry Rafferty was enlisted to sing vocals on The Way It Always Starts.

4 The film hosted many Scottish actors some then unknown but who have gone on to enjoy prominent careers. The cast included Peter Capaldi, left, Denis Lawson, John Gordon Sinclair, Jonathan Watson, Rikki Fulton, Alex Norton and Tam Dean Burn.

5 Bill Forsyth got his first choice for every cast selection. He chose Peter Riegert to portray Mac, refusing Warner Bros. suggestion of

Henry Winkler.

6 The asteroid “7345 Happer” is named after Burt Lancaster’s character in the movie, who is keen on astronomy, and also fulfilled the character’s wish to have a comet named after him.

7 In 2000, ex-us vicepresid­ent Al Gore, right, said

Local Hero was his favourite film.

8 Michael Douglas said he had begged Bill Forsyth for a role in the film and even stalked him but was turned down.
