ATM charges

AN ATM network boss has said the supply of cash should become a regulated utility such as water, saying charges for people withdrawing their money are “unacceptable”. Here’s what our readers said:

“Agreed. There are three cash machines in the village, all now charge a hefty amount for withdrawals. Local shops either do not take cards or charge for using them.

“The end result is trade will be driven towards other areas and older residents will struggle even more.”

@Bedo76, Twitter

“Cash is in decline for a good reason.”

@Adamrang, Twitter

“I refuse to pay 99p every time I withdraw my own money.”

@Mulferry7, Twitter

“UK society largely accepted the Thatcher dogma that ‘society does not exist’ and became little individual capitalists and watched and accepted as she sold off the family silver. Profit is the name of the game in this conservative unionist status quo UK. Get over it.”

Andrew Mcmillan, heraldscotland.com

“If water is free, how come I’m paying so much council tax?”

“Banks run the country and politicians let them.”

#Fridgegate

On the last day of the election campaign, Boris Johnson appeared to hide in a fridge as one of his aides swore live on television after a journalist tried to get the Prime Minister to agree to an interview. Our readers shared their views.

“What an embarrassment this guy is. What reason could there possibly be to vote to have this fool as PM? His position far outruns his ability.”

William Russell, heraldscotland.com

“You could not write the script.

What a coward. This is the man who is most likely to be the next PM. Rumour has it he will play the starring role in Frozen 3.”

Dougie Connor, heraldscotland.com

“A cowardly man surrounded by his choice of cowardly people. What has this country come to when anyone, and I do mean anyone, can contemplate electing him being our Prime Minister?”

Alasdair Mackenzie, heraldscotland.com

“Nicola Sturgeon, Jeremy Corbyn and all the others faced Andrew Neil. Johnson promised he would but the coward didn’t. You may not like Sturgeon or Corbyn but they at least have the courage but coward Johnson chickened out. Do you really want a leader who cannot hack it and hides when he is challenged? Vote for whoever will defeat this

Tory cowardly, immoral, corrupt and dishonest rabble. Lose Brexit and the Tories. Vote for the NHS and fairer government.”

School support

The number of Scottish pupils requiring extra help in school has reached a record high as campaigners raised fears over a “background of damaging cuts to services”.

“It’s apparent that there’s not enough investment in education and definitely not for those who need the extra support. Cost-cutting exercises as far as councils are concerned.”

@Spencejilly, Twitter

“It’s what happens when you cut public services and welfare for a decade while failing to provide proper employment and training opportunities.”

George Hannah, Facebook

“Better identification and understanding of additional support needs (ASN) but cuts to services make teachers’ jobs more difficult. Most schools do the best they can to support kids with ASN but that support all but disappears when the child leaves school.”

Mairi Logan, Facebook

“Maybe if the parents spent more time with their children the kids would learn something.”
