A veteran who braved freezing conditions and attacks by German submarines to deliver supplies to the eastern front has been awarded a medal usually given to Russian seamen.

Tom Davidson, 92, received the Medal of Ushakov from the Russian Consul in recognition of his heroic actions during the Second World War at a ceremony in Dalkeith. The Scot was just 19 when he joined the Royal Navy and sailed for the USSR, and served as a sailor until the end of the war.

Thousands of Santas dashed through the streets of Glasgow and Edinburgh to raise funds for charity. Kenny Dalglish was among the runners who donned red costumes and white beards to complete the 5k Santa Dash in Glasgow, which will raise money for the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice and the Marina Dalglish Appeal. Meanwhile, in Edinburgh around 1500 people ran a 1.5km circuit of Princes Street to raise money for children’s charity When You Wish Upon a Star and Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids campaign.

Thousands of videos featuring Scots comedian Billy Connolly have been ordered to be withdrawn from sale. The move will cost Mr Connolly and the video distributors, Polygram, thousands of pounds. The decision to remove the video, Billy Connolly Live 1994, from the shelves of retail outlets was taken following a complaint by the solicitor acting on behalf of alleged House of Horrors killer, Mrs Rosemary West. Mr Leo Goatley claimed a three-minute sketch by Mr Connolly about Mr and Mrs West could prejudice their trial.
