Teacher struck off after being filmed drunk wearing boxer shorts in street

-

A TEACHER who was filmed by a pupil drunk in the middle of a road wearing just his boxers and a pair of trainers has been struck off.

The secondary school history teacher was filmed as he stood almost naked at 8am.

Footage of the incident in June 2018 was then posted on Facebook where it was viewed by pupils and colleagues.

He also acted in a threatening and abusive manner when medics were trying to offer him some help. He was later charged by police but failed to tell his employers that he was facing a criminal offence.

When the case against him was called in court in January the teacher, known only as Teacher Z, was convicted and fined £240.

The teacher, who has been granted full anonymity, was then hauled before the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

He did not attend the hearing in

Edinburgh, but his lawyer told a panel that he admitted the charges against him and would consent to his name being struck off the register.

But he will be given an opportunity to return to the classroom if he takes “sufficient steps” to recover from an alcohol addiction.

He had blamed his actions on “alcohol misuse”.

The GTCS panel said: “The panel considered that having regard to the very serious nature of the conduct, the high risk of recurrence and the public interest considerations that the teacher falls significantly short of the standards expected.

“For these reasons, the panel concluded that the teacher is currently unfit to teach.

“As the panel determined that the teacher is unfit to teach it could only direct that the teacher be removed from the register.

“The panel had regard to the teacher’s position and decided to issue a consent order in accordance with rule 2.7 offering the teacher the opportunity to consent to removal from the register.”

He was granted anonymity by the GTCS after arguing he would suffer if his medical difficulties were made public.

The panel ruled the interests of the public in the identity of Teacher Z being made known were “outweighed” by the interests of the teacher in “all the circumstances”.
