THE remaining members of Monty Python’s comedy troupe have led tributes to co-founder Terry Jones following his death at the age of 77 from a rare form of dementia.

Jones’s family released a statement announcing the passing of the “beloved husband and father” on the evening of January 21.

Sir Michael Palin, John Cleese and Eric Idle were joined by dozens of stars from the world of comedy and television to voice grief at their former colleague’s death.

Sir Michael described Jones as “one of the funniest writer-performers of his generation”.

Cleese said he was “a man of so many talents and such endless enthusiasm”.

And Eric Idle, recalled the “many laughs [and] moments of total hilarity” they shared.

“It’s too sad if you knew him, but if you didn’t you will always smile at the many wonderfully funny moments he gave us,” he went on.

Sir Michael added: “Terry was one of my closest, most valued friends. He was kind, generous, supportive and passionate about living life to the full.

“He was far more than one of the funniest writer-performers of his generation, he was the complete Renaissance comedian – writer, director, presenter, historian, brilliant children’s author, and the warmest, most wonderful company you could wish to have.

“I feel very fortunate to have shared so much of my life with him and my heart goes out to Anna, Alison and all his family.”

The statement from Jones’s family said that he had died after a “long, extremely brave but always good humoured battle” with FTD, a rare form of dementia.

It added: “Over the past few days his wife, children, extended family and many close friends have been constantly with Terry as he gently slipped away at his home in North London.

“We have all lost a kind, funny, warm, creative and truly loving man whose uncompromising individuality, relentless intellect and extraordinary humour has given pleasure to countless millions across six decades.

“His work with Monty Python, his books, films, television programmes, poems and other work will live on forever, a fitting legacy to a true polymath.”

Radio presenter Tony Blackburn tweeted: “So sorry to hear Terry Jones has passed away, I just love Monty Python. RIP Terry and thanks for all the laughs.”

Comedy actor David Schneider tweeted: “News that arrives like a punch to the gut. Thanks for making us laugh so much, Terry.” Comic Katy Brand tweeted: “So sorry about Terry Jones.

“Just a very, very, very funny man. And a kind, thoughtful, interesting, and curious one too. What a great body of work he has left though. #Terryjones.”

Stephen Fry tweeted: “Farewell, Terry Jones. The great foot has come down to stamp on you. My god what pleasure you gave, what untrammelled joy and delight.

“What a wonderful talent, heart and mind.”

Bafta also paid tribute to Jones, posting a message online alongside a photograph of him and Sir Michael Palin in 2016.

The Alzheimer’s Society tweeted: “We’re very sorry to hear the sad news that Monty Python star Terry Jones passed away today aged 77.

“Terry had been living with dementia since 2015 and we fondly remember his support at our Memory Walks. Our thoughts go out to his family.”
