Brexit bill row

THE UK faces a constitutional crisis after each of the three devolved administrations voted against Brexit legislation, the SNP’S Westminster leader said. Ian Blackford spoke after the Welsh Assembly voted on Tuesday to reject the European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill – following in the footsteps of the Scottish Parliament and the Northern Ireland Assembly.

“Devolving power and control from the centre always brings on consequences. The main one being that people want ever more power and control. It is a natural development and you would think that it would have been recognised and understood by now.”

Andrew Mcmillan, heraldscotland.com

“At what time did we vote to enter this Union? We didn’t, it was imposed on us by an elite who had been well bribed to sell the country. Now we want our country back.” Joyce Molloy and Alastair Campbell,

“Unionism is now tearing at the seams, exposed for the mendacious and grotesque charade that it is. Self-governance for Scotland is the most pragmatic, practical and sensible way forwards now. As we have learned, our votes count for nothing in this unequal union of servitude.”

“I think it’s obvious this is no union of equals”

Scotland’s success

SCOTLAND is redefining what it means to be a successful nation by focusing on the well-being of its people, as well as economic growth, Nicola Sturgeon has said. The First Minister said Scotland is leading the way by giving both measures equal importance.

“Let’s forget about growing the economy – it’s all about being nice and feeling good. Forget poor schools and slipping down the international school rankings – the curriculum for entertainment is keeping the kids happy. In any event if it all goes paws up we can blame it on climate change and the evil Tories. Welcome to SNP land.”

Mary Wilson, heraldscotland.com

“I must be living in a ‘parallel universe Scotland’ if the FM believes that we are a successful nation.”

Gordon Moore, heraldscotland.com.

“With the best will in the world well-being will not feed your family or put a roof over your head unfortunately.” Gill Smith, Facebook

“Scotland will blossom once it becomes independent again. It is being held back by the Union. Free in ‘23 if the people of Scotland want it and the SNP, and its leadership, play their cards right.”

Gardens grilling

A HERITAGE watchdog has said around 700 people have signed up for a meeting over the future of public spaces in the Scottish capital like Princes Street Gardens. Campaigners called for a rethink in Edinburgh after the Princes Street Gardens were turned into a mudbath after the Christmas market. More than 2.6 million people visited the controversial market, which was at East Princes Street Gardens for seven weeks.

“I was taking a photograph of the destruction of Princes Street Gardens as they were packing up, and one of the workers started dancing about. It’s a disgrace. Underbelly are mocking us. The people paid to protect and conserve our city are destroying it.”

Hugh Oxford, Facebook

“The gardens have been left in a disgraceful state. Will all the grass be relaid with new grass so that the public who own the gardens be able to enjoy their outdoor space?”

Marc Rich, Heraldscotland.com

“An utter disgrace to look at and it’s just for profit. Worse [now that] most of the trees are gone. Even worse six benches for loved ones were binned tae one side and are now fire wood.”
