Scotland’s oldest working theatre has been officially designated as an important part of Europe’s cultural heritage. The 203-year-old Theatre Royal in Dumfries is the only one in Scotland and one of seven in Britain included by the European Commission in a list of 61 historic buildings and sites related to entertainm­ent and the performing arts.

They were selected for their ‘’historic, architectu­ral, artistic, and social value of European importance’’.

A young Biafran couple who live in Glasgow learned last night for the first time since the rebel territory fell that their six children are alive and well. News of their safety was broken to Mr and Mrs Cyril Ogidi at the home at 170 Wilton Street, Maryhill, last night after a cablegram was sent to “The Glasgow Herald” from Lagos, Nigeria. Mr Ogidi said later:- “I thank God for this. With all the atrocities and the lack of food we had almost given them up for dead.”

Sheriff Lee has assoilzied the defenders in an action brought in Glasgow Sheriff Court by the Corporatio­n of Glasgow against the East Coast Railway Company for damage caused to a tramway car on May last in Springburn Road. He found that the tramcar collided with one of the defenders’ lorries and that the collision was caused by the fault of the car driver. In his note the Sheriff said that in his opinion the proof had clearly establishe­d that the collision was due to the fault or negligence of the pursuers’ driver.
