1,845 prime hoggets sold at St Boswells auction as prices average 239p at Ayr event
HARRISON & Hetherington sold 65 clean cattle, 56 cast cows, 1,845 prime hoggets and 643 cast sheep at St Boswells yesterday.
Forty-two prime heifers sold to a top of 238p/kg to average 214p (-2p), while 22 prime bullocks peaked at 235p and averaged
211p (+6p). One young bull sold to £1,746 or 175p.
In the rough ring cast cows sold to £1,227 and 191p to average
136p (-3p).
Prime hoggets sold to £158 and 309p for Texels to average £107 or
242p (+8p).
In the cast sheep ring the average was £76 overall. Heavy ewes sold to £180 for Texels and averaged £109, while light ewes peaked at £127 for Cheviots and averaged £65.
The firm also sold 31 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 230p/kg to average 207p (+4p), while 32 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 225p and levelled at 193p (-10p).
Five prime, dairy-bred bullocks sold to 149p and averaged 143p (-10p).
There were also a total of 88 young bulls at the sale yesterday which averaged 172p overall (+11p).
The 52 prime, beef-bred young bulls sold to 226p and averaged 182p (+10p), while the 36 prime, dairybred bulls peaked at 188p and levelled at 156p (+9p).
In the rough ring, 138 cast dairy cows sold to 147p and averaged 109p (+3p), while 89 cast beef cows peaked at 189p and averaged 137p (+6p). Six cast bulls made up to
139p and averaged
116p (+14p).
There were also 1,469 prime hoggets that sold to £144 and 320p/kg to average 244p (+8p).
In the cast sheep ring, 149 heavy ewes sold to £215 for a pair of Texels and averaged £131 (+£18), while 34 light ewes peaked at £92 for a Swaledale and levelled at £71 (+£4).
Caledonian Marts had forward 462 store cattle at their March show and sale, and 537 store and breeding sheep at their fortnightly sale at
Stirling yesterday.
Bullocks also sold to 277p/kg for a pen of Aberdeen Angus and to £1200 for Simmentals. Heifers sold to 233p for a Charolais and to £1,160 for a pen of Simmentals.
Store hoggets sold to £96 for a pen of Beltex and Grit ewes sold to
£108 for BF ewes scanned for twins.
Messrs Craig Wilson sold 2,454 sheep comprising 2,020 prime hoggets and 434 cast sheep at Ayr yesterday.
Top price for hoggets was £140 for a Texel and second top price was
£136 for a pen of Beltex.
Top per kilo was 289p for a pen of seven Beltex.
The whole sale averaged 239p.
Cast sheep sold to £192 for Texel ewes. Mule Ewes Peaked at £124 and a pen of 14 Blackfaces sold at £108.
