Long time lockdown

Boris Johnson looks set to be away from the UK Government frontline for weeks as his father admitted he “almost took one for the team”. After spending his fifth night at St Thomas’s Hospital in London, the Prime Minister is now in a general ward after being moved out of the intensive care unit, where he spent the best part of three days. His spokesman revealed that Mr Johnson had “waved his thanks” to staff as he was moved to the general ward, stressing how he was “enormously grateful” for the care they had given him.

“Johnson Jnr should resign Now. He is unwell and unfit to do the job. As far as his daddy is concerned, who has escaped to his remote country pad, who cares what he has to say.”

“Looking at the graphs we are heading for the worst fatality rate in Europe. The US are in a league of their own but there are similarities in how both governments have mishandled this terrible situation. The lockdown should have begun weeks earlier and preparations months earlier. Our government has failed to protect the British people. When the peak is past they should resign.”

“How reassuring is it to hear that Boris Johnson is probably the only person on the planet that is, quote, “in extremely good spirits”.”

The Grand Tour

The UK government’s housing minister is facing fresh criticism after it emerged he broke lockdown protocols to drive 150 miles from London to his second home – hours after appearing at a Government briefing urging people to stay indoors. Robert Jenrick travelled to his second home – a country mansion in Herefordshire – where his wife and children live on the same day he said households across the UK “had a part to play by staying at home” amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“There are many NHS workers currently living away from home to avoid infecting their families. He has been in contact with a known superspreader, currently in hospital, so he should be selfisolating in any case. Also, we’re told he has a £2.5 m home in London. The value of his home is irrelevant, but his family could live with him if he is so desperate to see them.”

“Will he be gone in 24 hours like Calderwood? Come on Boris, or whoever is in charge, stop dithering, show some leadership.”

Jim Mackay, heraldscotland.com

“If he is travelling to his second home then for me it is quite clear that he is breaking the rules. This is totally unacceptable for someone in his position. He has to go if he has bent the rules.”

Easter resting

Scotland’s Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf has said lockdown measures have saved people’s lives, but warned against rules being broken over the Easter weekend. The Justice Secretary urged people to stick to the rules on the Easter weekend, with weather expected to improve.

“Mr Yousaf refers to police breaking up parties and I would say that is possibly the youth mainly being frustrated and saying to themselves, we are young and not in danger so what the .... you know what? It is understandable why they do what they do and there is no modern precedent for them to follow as an example.”

“One idea that could help stop people travelling might be to close the snow gates on busy roads in the Highlands like the A9, A82, A68 and A93. At this moment in time, there should only be essential travel and goods vehicles being on those roads.”
