Impressive show of cattle at St Boswells as 32 prime bullocks sell to a top of 230p per kg

HARRISON & Hetheringt­on Ltd sold 94 clean cattle, 57 cast cows, 1409 prime lambs and

494 cast sheep at St Boswells yesterday. The show of cattle this week was fantastic and ‘handy weight’ cattle were in great demand.

Thirty-two prime bullocks sold to a top of 230p/kg on four occasions to average 222p (n/c), while 57 prime heifers peaked twice at 237p to average 221p (-3p). Five young bulls sold to £1361 and 205p/kg.

In the rough ring cast cows sold to £1522 and 179p to average 150p (n/c).

New season prime lambs held up well again this week to average 225p/ kg (+1p). Top prices were £128 and 243p for Beltex lambs.

In the cast ring the average for all cast sheep was £80 which was up by one pound per head on last week. Heavy ewes sold to £125 for Suffolks and averaged £92, while light ewes peaked at £91 for Cheviots and averaged £66.

The firm also sold 14 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday which peaked at 230p/kg and levelled at 203p (-3p), while 12 prime, beef bred bullocks sold to 222p and levelled at 192p (-11p). One prime, dairy-bred bullock sold for 164p (-19p).

Fifty-eight beef-bred young bulls sold to 215p and averaged 179p (-4p), while 58 dairy-bred bulls peaked at 181p and levelled at 156p (+10p).

In the rough ring 153 cast dairy cows sold to 161p to average 115p (+1p), while 95 cast beef cows peaked at 198p to average 145p (-7p). Seven cast bulls made up to 149p and averaged 122p (-3p).

There were also 2297 prime lambs that sold to £129 and 318p/kg to average 230p (-5p).

In the cast sheep ring 354 heavy ewes sold to £107 for a Texel and averaged £69 (-£19), while 17 light ewes peaked at £79 for a Blackface and levelled at £51 (-£24).

Messrs Craig Wilson Limited sold 2089 prime lambs and 701 cast sheep at Ayr yesterday.

Top prices were £120 for a single Suffolk cross and 244p/kg for a pair of Beltex to average 223p (+2p)

In the cast sheep section heavy ewes peaked at

£170 for Texels, while Suffolks made up to £118. Mule ewes sold to £84 and Blackfaces peaked at £64.

Lawrie and Symington Ltd sold 34 prime cattle and 33 cast cows at Lanark yesterday.

Top prices were £1663 and 266p/kg for a Limousin heifer, while bullocks sold to £1477 and to 242p.

Cast beef cows sold to £1135 and 161p, while cast dairy cows peaked at £1055 and 118p.

Prime lambs (1344) sold to £133 for Beltex and 257p for Texels to average 224p/kg overall. Cast ewes (2356) peaked at £163 for Texels with Blackfaces to £89.
