Big Noise celebrates seven years of making music magic

-

A PROJECT created to bring music to one of Glasgow’s most deprived areas is celebrating its seventh birthday.

Among the events lined up to help Big Noise Govanhill mark the occasion are exclusive performances from the

Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

The programme is one of several which aim to give participants crucial life skills and experiences, including confidence, teamwork, resilience, pride and aspiration.

As part of the birthday celebrations, children and young people have been offered the chance to view performances and chat to musicians from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra during online music & Q&A sessions.

The sessions feature cellist Su-a Lee, bassoonist Alison Green, trumpeter Peter Franks and percussionist Louise Goodwin.

Tomorrow and Thursday will see those taking part come together to enjoy Big Noise Together – a series of largescale online learning and activity sessions..

Since the coronavirus pandemic forced it to pause face-to-face teaching, performance and activities in mid-march, the programme has delivered 700 live online lessons and created more than 200 teaching videos.

It has now started to deliver outdoor classes, as well as online community gatherings for adults and Baby & Toddler Noise sessions.

Organisers said the feedback from families had been extremely encouraging, highlighting how the lessons have helped the children to stay positive and focused during lockdown as well as enabling them to keep in touch with many of the friends they could not meet due to strict social distancing measures.

Elanor Gunn, Team Leader for Big Noise Govanhill, said: “It’s been an amazing and challenging year.

“Our children and young people have worked really hard to improve their instrumental skills and develop their musical abilities. I want to thank all of them and the Big Noise Govanhill team for their effort and enthusiasm.”

A wide range of partners and funders support Big Noise Govanhill, including players of People’s Postcode Lottery, Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Government and

Bank of Scotland Foundation.
