Great British Bake Off 2015 champion Nadiya Jamir Hussain, pictured, said winning the contest made her feel like “a giant” – despite her small stature.

The stay-at-home mother walked out of the Bake Off tent “a much stronger, confident person” after being crowned winner of series six, beating Ian Cumming and Tamal Ray in last night’s final.

She said: “I went into the tent as the smallest baker at 4ft 11in but I walked out feeling a giant.”

A German soldier who settled in Scotland after being sent to a prisoner of war camp during the Second World War has been reunited with his sister after nearly 80 years.

Heinz Roestel, 85, had given up hope of seeing his sister Edith again as the two were parted after their mother died when he was just six. However, the pair have finally met after Edith tracked him down to his home in the village of Penpont in Dumfries and Galloway.

A Scottish couple are celebratin­g the birth of their two daughters, born two years after their “triplet” brother. Mrs Sarah Gordon has just given birth to twin daughters, Jane and Mary, 26 months after having their brother, Jimmy. Technicall­y, they are triplets as they all came from the same batch of fertilised eggs. Mrs Gordon and her husband, Neil, of Gight, near Methlick, Aberdeensh­ire, were told five years ago they could not have children naturally and they decided to have in vitro fertilisat­ion treatment.

Mr Donald Liddle, Lord Provost of Glasgow, yesterday formally opened the 10-day Sauchiehal­l Street Shopping Festival and said he hoped that day would not be far off when shoppers would be able to cross the street without being afraid of traffic.

He said:- “There will be two experiment­al days with no traffic in Sauchiehal­l Street. This will be worthwhile just to let people see what happens and how comfortabl­e it can be for shoppers.”

An interestin­g collection of paintings and drawings representa­tive of British art was opened to the public last night in the People’s Palace, Glasgow Green. The central hall of the art gallery contains a series of watercolou­rs including examples of Cox, Cotman, Girtin, Rawlinson, Rosetti, Prout and Leighton, all of which are on loan from the

Victoria and Albert Gallery, London. The local artists represente­d are Hamilton

Maxwell, Leitch and Bough.
