‘Life as normal’

Three Scots academics have backed a call for a return to ‘life as normal’ using herd immunity.

“Boris together with his scientific advisors denied that was ever government policy. In your haste to make a point you perhaps haven’t thought this through.”

Hank Rollo, heraldscotland.com

“The big issue leading to lack of compliance is that politicians claim they are following the science but won’t publish it.

“Sturgeon told us that science said pubs had to shut in Aberdeen but not Glasgow, now she tells us that they need to shut in Glasgow but only because they serve alcohol.

“Show us the science Ms Sturgeon because it feels like you are playing politics with this.”

Michael Kent, heraldscotland.com

“That drum has been banging for a long time, but and hear’s the but, the correct systems and resources have to be in place to identify and shield the vulnerable.

“Not great for them, better for the general populous and the economy.

“It also requires the understanding that just as with any vaccine there will be personal tragedies, there also has to be legislation to mitigate that ambulance chasing virus.”

John Ritchie, heraldscotland.com

“Number 10 made it clear they reject herd immunity too.”

Jane Johnston, heraldscotland.com

“The anti- herd immunity scientists have had almost free reign across the globe, yet things are getting worse.

“Perhaps it’s time we gave the other experts a chance.”

Guybrush Threepwood, heraldscotland.com

“This stunt will give succour to right-wing populists and corporate lackeys the world over. Nice to see so many Swedes signing this daft petition. Remind me, how did herd immunity go for them?”

Elaine Stewart, heraldscotland.com

“The idea was rubbished and rejected right at the start of the pandemic. It would cause thousands of deaths they said and it wouldn’t work.

“Now when they have run out of ideas as to how to handle the situation they want to introduce it.

“They should not be able to do that without permission from the public as it is all about more lives being lost. A handful of people should not be allowed to impose this on the public.

“We should wait for a cure and do the best to manage the situation until that happens.”

Labour effort

Labour leader Keir Starmer exclusively told The Herald that it will be a “joint effort” to regain trust in his party with the Scottish electorate.

“I’m sure the ‘joint effort’ in Aberdeen will include the Tories as Labour try to find new ways of making themselves irrelevant in Scotland.

“Has Starmer called for the UK health minister to resign yet, given the state of infection growth in England is far higher per capita than in Scotland, Wales or NI.”

Finn Macgolgan, heraldscotland.com

“Countries like Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa and others have been able to drive down their infection rates and deaths just as the UK did but then they closed their borders and kept them closed, not flying off to infected resorts and bringing it back. All of them have avoided a second wave.

“It’s not rocket science, it’s seeding that you need to control. We need control of our borders. Scotland must become independent”

Jo Macdiarmid, heraldscotland.com

“Two English men telling Scots how to think and they seriously believe that they will succeed.

“You couldn’t make it up.”
