Thousands of acres of land in northern Scotland are to return to nature as a project to restore ancient woodlands across much of the country begins. A survey of an area three times the size of Inverness will form the basis of restoration efforts by Woodland Trust Scotland. During the past two years, specialist project officers have surveyed 11,000 hectares of what formerly ancient woodland sites at two areas in the Great Glen and the Cairngorms.

Holyrood’s decision to proceed with the building of a new Forth Road Bridge is absolutely vital to ensure Scotland’s economic wellbeing, Scotland’s new Transport Minister told MSPS. Keith Brown (pictured) referred to the construction of a worldclass structure. It would mean there would be “three bridges, three iconic designs over three centuries, in one splendid Scottish setting” spanning the firth, he added.

Hampden Park has been awarded a grant of up to £23m by the Millennium Commission, which will help turn it into one of the finest stadiums in the world. By far the biggest single National Lottery award made in Scotland, it will help complete the redevelopment of the national football stadium and also create a centre of excellence. The £51m redevelopment will increase Hampden’s capacity from 34,000 to 52,000.

Corporation bus services in parts of Glasgow – particularly Castlemilk – may be curtailed to-day because of a threatened strike by drivers and conductors at the Langside depot. Langside workers decided to strike for one day, but it was not known last night how many of the 300 drivers and conductors would stay away. If they strike it will be against a decision of the Glasgow and district passenger committee of the TGWU.

The National Executive of the Labour Party decided to call a special conference at the Central Hall, London, on December 29. The conference, which will be attended by members of the Parliamentary Labour Party, will inaugurate a national campaign on the Irish question with a view of peace and a permanent settlement on the line of the policy formulated by the party and endorsed by the Irish Labour Party and Trade Unions Congress.
