A six-year-old girl is causing a sensation in the staid world of Scottish chess by beating older competitio­n to land two major titles in a month. Carolina Espinosa Cancino, who has been playing chess since the age of two, won the 2016 Scottish Junior Chess Tournament last month. She competed in the Under-9 section, and played for five hours before taking the title. Then, little more than a week later, she scooped another Scottish junior title.

Prescripti­on charges will be abolishedf­rom the beginning of next month in what First Minister Alex Salmond said was a “momentous” event. Holyrood’s Health Committee yesterday approved the SNP Government’s plan to end the current £3 fee despite objections from the Conservati­ves and the Libdems. Charges have been gradually reduced over the last three years as the Government moved towards fulfilling an election pledge.

The ban on homosexual­s serving in the armed forces will remain in place, Defence Secretary Michael Portillo, pictured, announced yesterday, after a review to be published today found overwhelmi­ng opposition among servicemen to its abolition. However, the decision, condemned by gay activists as “blinkered and biased”, could pave the way for a challenge in the European Court of Human Rights by serving gays.

Glasgow magistrate­s yesterday decided not to grant a certificat­e for the film version of Tropic of Cancer, the book by Henry Miller.

Bailie John Fraser, senior magistrate, said: “About 10 of us saw the film at a private showing on Saturday. The problem was the language used right through the film.

“There was not one four-letter word you can think of that was not used, and there were some I did not know.”

A report concerning meetings held on Sunday last in the Avenue Theatre, Whiteinch, and Elder Street Picture House, Govan, was placed before the Magistrate­s of Glasgow yesterday, when the Chief Constable stated that the speeches at these meetings were of a most revolution­ary nature. The Magistrate­s agreed that should addresses of similar nature be made again thy would have no alternativ­e but to refuse any subsequent applicatio­ns.
