A six-year-old girl is causing a sensation in the staid world of Scottish chess by beating older competition to land two major titles in a month. Carolina Espinosa Cancino, who has been playing chess since the age of two, won the 2016 Scottish Junior Chess Tournament last month. She competed in the Under-9 section, and played for five hours before taking the title. Then, little more than a week later, she scooped another Scottish junior title.

Prescription charges will be abolishedfrom the beginning of next month in what First Minister Alex Salmond said was a “momentous” event. Holyrood’s Health Committee yesterday approved the SNP Government’s plan to end the current £3 fee despite objections from the Conservatives and the Libdems. Charges have been gradually reduced over the last three years as the Government moved towards fulfilling an election pledge.

The ban on homosexuals serving in the armed forces will remain in place, Defence Secretary Michael Portillo, pictured, announced yesterday, after a review to be published today found overwhelming opposition among servicemen to its abolition. However, the decision, condemned by gay activists as “blinkered and biased”, could pave the way for a challenge in the European Court of Human Rights by serving gays.

Glasgow magistrates yesterday decided not to grant a certificate for the film version of Tropic of Cancer, the book by Henry Miller.
Bailie John Fraser, senior magistrate, said: “About 10 of us saw the film at a private showing on Saturday. The problem was the language used right through the film.
“There was not one four-letter word you can think of that was not used, and there were some I did not know.”

A report concerning meetings held on Sunday last in the Avenue Theatre, Whiteinch, and Elder Street Picture House, Govan, was placed before the Magistrates of Glasgow yesterday, when the Chief Constable stated that the speeches at these meetings were of a most revolutionary nature. The Magistrates agreed that should addresses of similar nature be made again thy would have no alternative but to refuse any subsequent applications.
