Mcdonnell in call on campaigns
THE Electoral Commission must launch an urgent inquiry into third-party campaigning following the “smearing” of Jeremy Corbyn, John Mcdonnell has said.
The former shadow chancellor told the Commons that groups including Campaign Against Corbynism spent large sums on a social media campaign attacking the former Labour leader prior to the 2019 snap General Election
“without declaring the source of their funds”.
Representing the Speaker’s Committee on the Electoral
Commission, Labour’s Christian Matheson said the independent agency “monitor the activity of non-party campaigners”.
Mr Mcdonnell called for an “urgent, serious and in-depth inquiry”.
