Three left fighting for life after axe attack

-

Vetlanda: Three people wounded in an assault by a man using an axe in Sweden are in a lifethreatening condition, hospital officials have said.

The update came as police reduced the overall number of victims to seven.

The suspected assailant, a man in his

20s, was shot, arrested and is being treated in hospital, police said.

The attack took place in the afternoon and police say there are five crime scenes in Vetlanda, a town of 13,000.

Police said the man, who they would not identify in line with Swedish policy, is known to them for petty crimes. Overnight, officers raided an apartment where he was reportedly staying. The Expressen tabloid said the suspect was a 22-year-old man from Afghanistan.

Texas: Spacex’s futuristic Starship looked to have performed a perfect touchdown on Wednesday before exploding with so much force that it was hurled into the air.

The failure occurred just minutes after Spacex declared success.

The full-scale prototype of Elon Musk’s envisioned Mars ship soared more than six miles after lifting off from the southern tip of Texas on Wednesday.

It descended horizontally over the Gulf of Mexico, then flipped upright just in time to land.

The shiny bullet-shaped rocket ship remained intact this time at touchdown.

But then the Starship exploded and was tossed in the air, before slamming back into the ground in flames.

There was no immediate comment from Spacex on what went wrong. But Musk looked on the bright side in a tweet: “Starship 10 landed in one piece!” RIP SN10, honorable discharge.”

Amsterdam: The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said it had started a rolling review of Sputnik V, many months after the vaccine was first approved for use in Russia and after dozens of countries around the world have authorised it.

The European regulator said the review was based on results from lab studies and research in adults, which suggest the vaccine may help protect against coronavirus, it said in a statement.

Despite scepticism about Russia’s introduction of the vaccine, which was rolled out before it had completed late-stage trials, the vaccine appears to be safe and effective.

California: The 13 people killed in one of the deadliest highway crashes involving migrants sneaking into the US had entered California through a section of border fence with Mexico that was cut away, apparently by smugglers, immigration officials have said.

Surveillance video showed a Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Suburban drive through the opening. The video has not been publicly released as it is part of an ongoing investigation.

The Suburban, carrying 19 people, caught fire for unknown reasons on a nearby interstate highway after entering the US. All escaped the vehicle and were taken into custody.

The Expedition crammed with 25 people continued on, and a tractor-trailer struck it a short time later. Ten of the 13 killed in that crash have been identified as Mexican citizens.
