Football fans who are fighting to scrap an archaic law that has forced clubs to abandon their crests have been left in limbo as heraldic rules become mired in confusion. More than 20 clubs may fall foul of ancient laws governing heraldry if their badges include traditiona­l elements such as shields, lions, thistles or saltires. Airdrieoni­ans have already been forced to ditch their historic badge after a complaint was made to the Court of the Lord Lyon.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust has launched a recruitmen­t drive for its project to kill grey squirrels. The trust is recruiting two “grey squirrel controller­s” on a fixedterm contract to help with its Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels scheme. The posts, which run until the end of October, carry a pro-rata salary of £16,400 for a 35-hour week. “The successful candidates will carry out grey squirrel control to a targeted programme,” the trust states in its advert.

Hundreds of twitchers converged on a quiet corner of south Ayrshire at the weekend, all hoping for a glimpse of a pair of birds rarely seen in the UK.

The arrival of two harlequin ducks, on the coast at Kennedy’s Pass, on the A77 just south of Girvan, caused a flurry of activity in the bird watching community on Saturday.

By yesterday, droves of enthusiast­s were heading for the spot from all over the UK.

Recurring vandalism at the David Cargill Women’s Royal Voluntary Services Club for old folk in Oran Street, Maryhill, Glasgow, may force it to close. Mrs Pat Hamilton, W.R.V.S. western division administra­tor, said yesterday: “We are wondering how long we can go on like this. In the two years since the club opened there has been endless trouble with vandals.staff arrived one morning to find five windows broken and all the door handles broken off. “

Jane Brown was convicted at Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday of having, between January 23 and March 18 neglected five of her children, of ages ranging from 2 to 14 years, by failing to provide them with adequate clothing and bedding and failing to keep them clean, contrary to the Children Act, 1906. It was stated in the course of the evidence that the woman’s husband gave her from £4 10s to £5 per week, and one of the boys was earning £3 per week.
