Libdems highlight plunge in schools offering cycling training

-

THE number of Scottish primary schools offering cycling proficiency training has plummeted in recent years, new figures suggest.

Figures obtained by the Scottish Liberal Democrats show 62 per cent of primaries offered some training in 2014/15.

But by 2019/20, this had fallen to 34%, and by the start of the 2020 school year, provision dropped further still to 28%.

The Libdems said the figures were gathered following Freedom of Information requests to local authorities.

The party said it is committed to helping every child complete their cycling proficiency test by the end of primary school as part of a plan to “boost biking”.

It also wants every adult to be able to take cycling tuition and a test if they want it. Carole Ford, Libdem transport spokeswoman and lead candidate for Glasgow, said: “It is critical that we strip emissions out from every part of our transport system, and help people live more active lifestyles.

“But these new figures show that in the last few years, the chance to learn how to cycle safely has become the exception rather than the rule.

“Lockdown showed that when people feel that cycling is a safe option, they are eager to take it up.

“With quieter roads, whole families were taking the opportunity to get out and get active in a safe and sustainable way.”

The SNP said it will provide free bikes “for all children of school age who cannot afford them” if it is re-elected.

A spokesman added: “We’ll also ensure every child in Scotland leaves school with the ability to cycle safely.”

It came as Libdem leader Willie Rennie yesterday visited the Highlands, where his party is targeting the Snp-held Caithness, Sutherland and Ross seat in the upcoming Holyrood election on May 6.
