Families of the 96 Liverpool fans who died in the Hillsborough disaster (see tribute, right) declared justice had finally been done as an inquest jury ruled victims were unlawfully killed in a tragedy caused by police blunders.
Lawyers acting for the families said the conclusions, at the end of the longest jury case in British legal history, had completely vindicated their 27-year battle for the truth.

Around 120 members of The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, were the last to arrive back at their base in Penicuik. Operating from Lashkar Gah, the battalion carried out patrols and security and training for Afghan national security forces. No fusiliers were killed during the tour. Lieutenant Colonel Dougie Graham, commanding officer, said the tour was successful and praised the hard work of the battalion.

All Safeway supermarkets are to start using a system in which customers scan their own groceries. “Shop & Go” means a handset will be used to pay for purchases without having to unload and reload trolleys at the checkout. The system has been tried out successfully at 24 stores. Mr Roger Partington, marketing director, said: “Shop & Go has made the shopping trip much easier, taking away the more time consuming processes.”

A nun died and another was badly injured yesterday when their car was in collision with a Glasgow Corporation eight-ton breakdown vehicle at Victoria Road and Butterbiggins Road, Eglinton Toll, Glasgow. The nun who died was Sister Mary Hennessy, aged 56, a teacher at Our Lady of the Missions School, Cathcart. Her companion who was injured is Sister Teresa Devlin, aged 52, who has been superior for six years at the order’s Netherlee Road House.

In connection with the discovery in the Borgie Glen at Cambuslang of a coal seam, which is being worked by the miners on behalf of the poor and needy in the Cambuslang district, there is evidence that the coal in this locality has been worked on an extensive scale. The old stoops which have been left in indicate a method of working on par with that conducted by the monks of old when they discovered “the black stane that burns”.
