Mcqueen’s Small Axe series picks up 15 nomination­s for Bafta TV awards

SMALL Axe, the anthology series directed by Sir Steve Mcqueen, has garnered 15 nomination­s at this year’s Bafta TV awards.

It has been nominated for nine craft awards and six in the television category. The show’s stars – John Boyega and Letitia Wright – have each been nominated in the acting categories, Boyega for his role in Red, White and Blue, with Wright nominated for her role in Mangrove.

Netflix’s royal drama series The Crown has received a total of 10 nomination­s – four TV nomination­s and six in the craft categories.

Actor Josh O’connor is nominated for his role as the Prince of Wales, with his co-stars Helena Bonham Carter and Tobias Menzies also nominated.

May Destroy You has received eight nomination­s, with BBC’S Normal People receiving seven nomination­s.

Actress Daisy Edgar-jones is nominated for her role in Normal People in the leading actress category.

Also in the category are Billie Piper, Hayley Squires, Jodie Comer, Letitia Wright and Michaela Coel.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden congratula­ted this year’s Bafta TV nominees, tweeting: “Huge congratula­tions to all the nominees. The pandemic has presented so many challenges but this has been a fantastic year for British TV and British talent.”

Charlotte Moore, the BBC’S chief content officer, said : “This is a great year for BBC Television – the huge spread of Bafta nomination­s reflects the incredible range and quality of genre-defining, world-class programmes and contributi­ons across the board.”

She added: “I would like to give a special mention to Steve Mcqueen’s anthology series Small Axe for receiving the most nomination­s with a phenomenal 15 in total, I May Destroy You with eight and Normal People with seven.”
