The last remaining Scottish-built turbine steamer has returned to the Clyde for restoratio­n more than 80 years after it was launched. TS Queen Mary returned to home waters for the first time in 40 years after a charity raised more than £300,000 in under a year to make the return voyage possible. Robbie Coltrane, the actor, is patron of charity Friends of TS Queen Mary, and said: “My old father would be proud. I’m so glad to see her return safely..”

107th in the world and until Saturday night most people would have assumed its pop music was even less likely to beat Italy, Germany and Sweden in a major European competitio­n. But that was before Azerbaijan scooped the Eurovision Song Contest at only the fourth time of asking . The winning song, Running Scared, was performed by Eldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal.

A collection of medals belonging to a war hero which are to be auctioned in aid of the Dunblane Fund were unveiled yesterday in Edinburgh. The three medals, which were awarded to Sir Michael Nethersole while he served in the Indian Civil Service, will go under the hammer in Philips London salerooms in July. The decoration­s are expected to fetch up to £2000. They are being sold on the instructio­ns of the late war veteran’s daughter.
