Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale, pictured, has apologised to senior colleagues for her comments during the Holyrood election campaign that she could “possibly” back independen­ce. She said sorry to her party’s governing body for remarks believed to have harmed Labour’s chances at the ballot box. At the same meeting, her deputy Alex Rowley was criticised for suggesting the party should have backed home rule as an alternativ­e to independen­ce.

It was the most symbolic event in Anglo-irish relations for almost a century. In a gesture that would have been unthinkabl­e a generation ago, the Queen yesterday laid a wreath at a memorial in Dublin to IRA members killed in the campaign against British rule on the first day of her four-day state visit to the country. It came as groups of pro-republican­s waved placards demanding Britain leaves Northern Ireland.

The Princess Royal arrived in Edinburgh yesterday to take up residence at the Palace of Hollyroodh­ouse. A guard of honour was provided by the 1st Battalion The Royal Scots and the keys of the city were presented to her at a ceremony at the palace last night. Princess Anne, as Lord High Commission­er and representi­ng the Queen, will address the opening of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland this morning.

The main runway at Glasgow Airport is to be extended to 8420ft., but it will be next summer before the work, costing £2m., can be completed. An official announceme­nt by Mr Gordon Campbell, Secretary of State for Scotland, is expected this week. The decision will end three years of controvers­y during which supporters of Prestwick Airporrt contended that an extension at Glasgow could result in operators leaving the Ayrshire airport

100 years ago

A memorial to members of the Lighting Department of Glasgow Corporatio­n who were killed in the war was unveiled in the banqueting hall of the City Chambers yesterday by Lord Provost Paxton.

Along with the memorial there is a roll of honour of those who served in the war.

In 1914 the number of male employees in the department was 1078. Of these 303 joined the forces.
