Petition launched to save historic Scots biscuit factory as job axe fears grow

-

WORKERS at the only Mcvities factory in Scotland have launched a petition to stop the closure of the 100-year-old institution – and save nearly 500 jobs.

Biscuit bosses sparked fury after announcing plans to shut the flagship factory in Tollcross, Glasgow, and shift production to other sites next year, putting 479 jobs at risk in one of the city’s most deprived areas.

The move would leave entire families unemployed amid fears it would be “devastating” to the community where the factory is a major employer.

East End residents and workers at the factory have now launched a petition to save the plant – with union bosses confirming a demonstration will take place at the weekend.

The petition has been organised by the Save Our Jobs Tollcross campaign, backed by the GMB Union, who represent some of the members at the factory.

Union bosses branded the plans “utterly shameful” and are calling for full transparency from owners Pladis.

Residents said the impact of the closure would be devastating for the community – with entire families working there.

The petition states: “Mcvities Tollcross has a proud history and heritage in the city of Glasgow and has served many communities with jobs and also kept the whole nation fed with great branded biscuits like Digestives and Hobnobs.

“It was announced to the workforce during world mental health week that the plan for the factory was to wind down and close with the loss of nearly 500 jobs.

“As you can imagine the workforce were shocked and left devastated at the news.”

Meanwhile, an action group has been formed to look at options to secure a future for the factory. Scottish Government Business Minister Jamie Hepburn and Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken will chair the group, which will also include unions, Scottish Enterprise and other partners.
