Wanted: manager for new Speyside distillery
VENERABLE Scotch whisky company Gordon & Macphail is on the hunt for a candidate to run its new Speyside distillery.
The Elgin-based merchant is looking for a distillery manager to run The Cairn, which is currently being built at Craggan – billed as the “gateway” to the famous whisky region.
The distillery, which will be the company’s second after the Benromach in Forres, is due to open next spring.
Gordon & Macphail said the new general manager will play a key role in developing The Cairn, which will be focused on “creating the next generation of whisky excellence”.
The name of the new distillery was inspired by its location overlooking the Cairngorm Mountains. It will include a visitor experience, tastings rooms, retail space and bistro.
Stuart Urquhart, operations director at Gordon & Macphail, said: “Everyone at Gordon & Macphail is excited to be launching The Cairn Distillery next year to bring something new to people who love single malt Scotch whisky across the globe.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious distillery manager with a passion for single malt Scotch whisky and in-depth knowledge of production to join an internationally renowned and growing family business. The distillery manager will have a key role to play in creating a new, highquality single malt.”
Speaking to The Herald last year, Gordon & Macphail’s managing director, Ewan Mackintosh, said The Cairn would take a more modern approach to distilling than Benromach, which the company acquired in
1993 and officially reopened in 1998. Mr Mackintosh said the “whole process will be automated,” at The Cairn.
