The first osprey chick of the season has hatched on one of Scotland’s most famous nests – after a 12-hour struggle. Female osprey Lassie hatched her first egg of the season on the nest at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Reserve near Dunkeld. The chick started to peck its way out at about 3am and emerged at 3.18pm. It is the 79th egg to hatch at Loch of the Lowes since the Osprey Protection Programme started in 1969.

Actress Penelope Keith, pictured, yesterday proudly launched a new vessel on an ancient ferry route. A keen sailor herself, Ms Keith admitted to “having a thing about ferries” revealing that she had always wanted to make a TV programme about them, but had not been able to persuade executives to take the plunge. She performed the ceremonial duties at the launch of the Cromarty Queen’s new service, which will link Cromarty and Nigg.

The Conservati­ve Party was forced into a desperate rearguard action yesterday after allegation­s over party funding and a possible loss of leading contributo­rs. It was put under fresh pressure to reveal who aids its coffers after party chairman Brian Mawhinney ordered a full investigat­ion into allegation­s .of a funding scandal. One report claimed the party had donations from businessme­n linked to Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic.

Dozens of telephone calls, mostly abusive, have been received by Mr Frank Haddock, a Glasgow business man who has innocently become involved in the controvers­y over the city’s first sex supermarke­t. Mr Haddock, aged 38, is the general manager of Scot-trust Industrial Services, Ltd., of 45 Renfield Street. He complained yesterday that he had had the misfortune to inherit the telephone number of the sex shop owner, Mr John Cameron.

100 years ago

There were no developmen­ts of importance yesterday in connection with the labour dispute which has arisen at Glasgow as a result of the refusal of a number of railwaymen to assist in the transport of imported coal from the docks.

Yesterday another man – a shunter – was suspended for declining to handle the traffic. This brings the total number of men suspended at Glasgow up to 51.
