A historic smoking room at an estate made famous by Sir Walter Scott is to open to the public . The 138-year-old room at Bowhill House, country home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch, is being made public after undergoing a transforma­tion by two renowned textile and tapestry studios – Glasgow’s Timorous Beasties and Edinburgh’s Dovecot Studios. The Smoking Room was once regarded as the inner sanctum for gentlemen at the country estate near Selkirk.

It is a long way from Tiger Bay to Pacific Quay, but Dame Shirley Bassey , pictured, made the wait worthwhile as she lit up the red carpet at the Scottish Fashion Awards, held at the Glasgow Science Centre last night. Wearing a floor-length tartan gown by Scottish designer Graeme Black and a glittering crystal necklace and bracelet, and carrying a handbag with a Sporran theme, Dame Shirley, 74, said it was her first visit to the city in years.

If you have to lose your wallet then the best city in Britain to mislay it is in Glasgow. Lose it in light-fingered Cardiff and you may as well wave it goodbye. Glasgow comes out top of an honesty test, set up by Reader’s Digest magazine, in which 80 wallets were dropped in towns and cities across the country.

The test showed that Glasgow and Lemington Spa/warwick tied as the most honest communitie­s.

Woodside Health Centre, the first of a series of centres planned for Glasgow, was described as the “prototype of the urban health centre of the future” by Lady Tweedsmuir, Minister of State, Scottish Office, yesterday when she officially opened the centre. The centre, built at a cost of about £225,000, is the largest and the first of the 27 now operating in Scotland to include a university teaching element. Lady Tweedsmuir said there were plans for many more centres in Scotland.

The annual general meeting of the Discharged Catholic Prisoners’ Aid Society, Glasgow, was held yesterday in the office of the society at Duke Street. The report, which was submitted and approved, showed a marked increase in the number of prisoners liberated from Duke Street and Barlinnie Prisons during the year. Food and lodging were provided by the society to 33 men, employment was found for 52, and gratuities dispensed to 247.
