A bomb squad was called to Nairn beach to carry out explosions of Second World War devices which were found during a routine patrol by a local coastguard rescue team. The devices are believed to have been used to train British troops in the run-up to the D-day landings in 1944. Photograph­s of the devices were sent to the Royal Navy’s bomb disposal unit at Faslane. Ordnance experts then travelled to Nairn to make the area safe.

Scotland was battered by torrential rain on the longest day of the year yesterday, while a sunny Stonehenge hosted the summer solstice. The dismal weather north of the Border on the day when sunlight should be at its peak underlined what so far has been a washout summer for Scots. Visitors to Calton Hill in Edinburgh were armed with waterproof­s and umbrellas against the downpours, while shoppers in Glasgow were deluged by heavy rain.

Scotland is reflected in all its diversity in the programme for the 1995 Glasgow Fair Festival, which was announced yesterday. Combining such diverse strands as the bicentenar­y of the death of the national bard Robert Burns, pictured, and the historic communal clothes drying area on Glasgow Green, the seventh festival has more than a glance over its shoulder.

Glasgow magistrate­s, who are compiling evidence for the Government inquiry into safety at sports grounds, are to visit Shawfield Park on Monday, and later in the week they hope to inspect Ibrox Stadium. Bailie James Anderson said yesterday: “Clyde FC offered us two dates to visit Shawfield, and we chose Monday. Rangers FC said they would be happy to put themselves at our disposal and make all facilities available for a visit. “

A statement by the City Chamberlai­n to the Finance Committee in connection with Glasgow Corporatio­n Committee on the Kelvin Hall showed that the surplus accruing from the various exhibition­s held in the hall during the financial year was £45,000. The sub-committee instructed him to allocate £16,000 to the revenue account of the Common Good and to apply the balance towards liquidatin­g the capital indebtedne­ss of the hall.
