Prime heifers peak at 266p at St Boswells as 358 ewes with lambs at foot sold in Stirling

HARRISON & Hetheringt­on sold 50 clean cattle, 39 cast cows, 1,101 prime lambs, 41 prime hoggets and 249 cast sheep at St Boswells yesterday.

Ten prime bullocks sold to 264p/kg and averaged 248p (+6p), while 40 prime heifers peaked at 266p to average 249p (+4p).

In the cast ring cows peaked at £1,681 and 221p to average 163p (+10p). Prime lambs sold to £156 and 306p/kg for Texels to average £118 or 275p (-29p), while prime hoggets peaked at £155 for Texels and 263p for Texels to average £100 or 223p (n/c).

Heavy cast sheep sold to a top of £169 for Texel ewes to average £119 (+£5), while light ewes peaked at £123 for North Country Cheviots to average £84 (+£12).

The firm also sold 24 prime heifers at Carlisle yesterday which peaked at 247p/kg and averaged 218p (-5p), while 21 beefbred bullocks sold to 242p and levelled at 222p (+2p). Fifty-six, beef-bred young bulls peaked at 249p and averaged 208p (-3p), while 21 dairy-bred, young bulls sold to 187p and levelled at 167p (-5p).

In the rough ring 83 cast beef cows peaked at 232p to average 168p (+11p), while 160 cast dairy cows sold to 178p to average 125p (-5p). Six cast bulls made up to

174p to average 146p (+3p). There were also 1952 prime lambs that peaked at £200 or 476p/ kg to average 274p (-38p).

Lowland cast ewes (405) peaked at £195 for a Suffolk to average £97 (-£12), while 18 hill ewes sold to £126 for a Hill Cheviot to average £79 (+£23).

Messrs Craig Wilson sold 1,501 prime lambs and 400 cast sheep and hoggets at Ayr yesterday.

The large show of lambs was cheaper for all classes this week as increasing numbers come forward. The whole sale averaged 259p or £108 which is still up 38p/kg on the year. Top price of the day was £135 for a pen of three Texel lambs or 323p for another pen of Texels. Cast sheep sold at similar rates on the week. Top price of the day was for a pair of Texels at £189, closely followed at £184 for other Texels. Mule ewes sold to £106 on two occasions, while Blackfaces peaked at £95.

Meanwhile, cast rams made up to £164 for a Blue De Maine Ram. Hoggets are still selling well for the time of the year and were topped at £109 for Texels.

Caledonian Marts sold 358 ewes with lambs at foot at Stirling yesterday. Top prices were £238 for a pen of 21 Texel and Mule ewes with twin lambs, while prices per head peaked at £82 for a Continenta­l ewe with a single lamb.
