Train cancellations have left angry passengers stranded at the remote Highland station made famous in the film Trainspotting. Scotrail has endured a deluge of complaints after the disruption on the West Highland Line. Walker Bob Shorter, had been due to travel with a party of 10 from Corrour to Tulloch on May 28. But he was left stranded at Corrour on Rannoch Moor – around 10 miles from the nearest public road – when his train was cancelled.

A plaque to commemorate the anniversary of Nelson Mandela, pictured, being honoured with the Freedom of the City of Glasgow was unveiled yesterday. The tribute, which is to be situated within the foyer of Glasgow City Chambers, marks 30 years since the South African was accorded the award. Glasgow led the world in honouring Mr Mandela with the accolade in 1981 when it became the first local authority to take the controversial step.

Severe damage was caused to the Erskine Bridge over the Clyde yesterday after a £70m oil platform scraped along its underside while being towed down river. The 50 metre-high rig’s passage under the bridge was not blocked and most lanes on the bridge were allowed to stay open to traffic while engineers carried out a structural inspection. However, it was decided to close the bridge to allow a “full engineering inspection”.

Because of their concern at the heavy extra rates burden Glasgow council house tenants will have to bear – their total outlay will go up by an average of 41% compared with an overall rise of 19% in the city – Glasgow Corporation are likely to lodge a mass appeal against the valuations placed on their 155,000 houses. The majority Labour group are to investigate the possibility of an appeal after the new rates were announced by Treasurer William Gray.

All through the deserted areas houses and then whole villages are on fire by the hands of those who have abandoned them. The number of starving refugees making for Moscow is estimated at ten million. The Government of the Soviets has taken all possible steps to prevent these from entering the town.
