FOUR OF THE BEST

-

Can I Improve My Memory? Channel 4, 8pm

It’s the last in the series, and the three remaining celebs are about to face their toughest test yet – learning a foreign language in just one week. To see whether they have mastered their new tongue, they’ll have to take part in a conversational role play with host Sandi Toksvig. The two celebs who perform the best will then go head to head in the “tray test” – they are given 60 seconds to memorise 25 objects and another 60 seconds to recall them all. The average person remembers just seven, but after all their training, how many will the eventual winner be able to reel off?

My Cornwall with Fern Britton Channel 5, 8pm

She may have been born in London, but Cornwall has always had a special place in Fern Britton’s heart. She first fell in love with the county as a child during a holiday to Looe, so where better to start this twopart documentary exploring just what makes the region so special? Of course, there will be trips to the beach, but Fern is also hoping to look beyond the bucket and spades to find out more about how Cornwall became such a unique place, with its own language, culture, traditions and ancient myths.

Yorkshire Firefighters BBC2, 8pm

Being a firefighter is always a challenging job, but the second episode of the documentary series finds the Yorkshire crew dealing with more difficult conditions than usual. Not only is the pandemic making their work more difficult, but Christmas is coming, bringing with it plummeting temperatures and dangerous driving conditions. The teams are called out to deal with a gas explosion, which has left two people seriously injured and a village community badly shaken.

Undercover Big Boss STV, 9pm

The series Undercover Boss first appeared on Channel 4 in 2009 and ran for five years. It was such a success, countries all over the world launched their own versions – and now ITV has decided there’s still life in the format and has brought it back to our screens. If you missed the various different iterations, it sees chief executives and company bosses learning what’s really happening on the shop floor as they pose as low-level employees at their own businesses, only this time, due to the pandemic, the stakes are arguably higher than ever. First up is Alfie Best, owner of Wyldecrest Parks, the largest caravan and park home operator in Europe. Unlike many business owners, he’s experienced something of a boom as more people choose to holiday in the UK. He’s on a mission to find out if his staff are making the most of the opportunity.
