FOUR OF THE BEST

-

Derry Girls Channel 4, 9pm

Conleth Hill recently delivered a top-class performance in Holding, ITV’S wonderful adaptation of Graham Norton’s debut novel.

Now he’s back on the box, making a guest appearance as local psychic Carlos Santini – the Quinns hope he can help them make contact with the spirit of a much-loved family member. Meanwhile, the pals are planning a booze-filled weekend break in Donegal, something that is sure to test James’s limited driving experience to its limit. But how will they cope without adults for the first time?

Life After Life BBC2, 9pm

We’re warned that the latest episode of the BBC’S adaptation of Kate Atkinson’s mindbending best-selling novel includes some violence and upsetting scenes – so brace yourself. It also features another twist in the tale as Ursula’s whirlwind romance with Derek becomes very serious indeed when they tie the knot. Unfortunately, finding domestic bliss and harmony proves to be more difficult than she imagined. She thinks a summer break in Germany is the tonic she needs – but it could prove a foolhardy move as war looms ever closer.

Freeze the Fear with Wim Hof BBC1, 9pm

Here’s a bit of welcome relief – the celebs get a respite from their teeth chattering thanks to a challenge that actually gets them sweating in Wim’s “gym” at the top of a mountain. But the warmth is short-lived – after learning how his techniques have helped some of the world’s most successful athletes, he puts them through a regimen than includes a barefoot jog through the snow. Also on the menu is a game that involves jumping into one of two holes of varying depth – the participants won’t know which they’re in until they’ve taken a leap of faith.

The Man with a Penis on His Arm Channel 4, 10.05pm

The programme with the most jawdropping title of the week is actually a very serious documentary following the story of three men, not just one. The title actually refers to the situation of Malcolm Macdonald, a mechanic whose penis turned black and fell off after he contracted a horrific blood infection. Surgeons constructed a new one on his arm, the intention being to transfer it to his groin – a procedure which, six years later, is yet to happen. He describes his experience and hopes for the future.
