Award for restoration of historic ferry station

THE restoration of a century-old A-listed ferry terminal has won an architectural award. Wemyss Bay’s terminal in Renfrewshire recently underwent a substantial refurbishment and upgrading of the timber pier walkway, which was built in 1903. It has now been awarded the 2017 RICS Scotland Award for Infrastructure. Defective timbers to the walkway bays were taken away and restored and the walkway now incorporates the original Caledonian Railway Company colour scheme, ensuring the pier was brought back to its former glory.

BORIS Johnson won a second term as London mayor – beating Labour rival Ken Livingstone – after a closer contest than expected. The flamboyant politician, who bucked the national trend after heavy Tory losses elsewhere, was re-elected with 1,054,811 votes, 62,608 more than Livingstone. In a victory speech after the result was announced at midnight, Mr Johnson told supporters as Star Wars Day drew to a close at the stroke of midnight: “May the force be with you.”

NEW Secretary of State for Scotland Donald Dewar spent the weekend meeting his senior civil servants and planning for the creation of the Parliament in Edinburgh which will deliver him a place in the history books. The Civil Service set out to operate under the traditions of governmental hand-over, with Scottish Office Permanent Secretary Sir Russell Hillhouse meeting Mr Dewar on Saturday to explain the plans he had already made.

GLASGOW’S new Lady Provost, Mrs Winifred Mains, has one gift which could be a great asset to her in the busy life which lies ahead of her. “I’m the greatest relaxer in the world” she told me. “I can sit down anywhere, any time, and relax completely for 10 minutes or so – even drop off to sleep.”

Andrews had pride of place in the celebrations of to-day, the University contenting itself with functions of a purely social character. Relations here between town and gown are of the most friendly character, and it was therefore appropriate that the academic ceremonies of should have been supplemented by the admission to the roll of freemen of the city of two gentlemen prominent in the proceedings. Lord Wester Wemys of Wemys, Admiral of the Fleet, and Sir James M. Barrier were honoured.
