Treason accused arrested

SPANISH authorities have arrested a Ukrainian politician and blogger accused of treason in his home country.

An official with the Spanish national police confirmed that Anatoly Shariy was detained on Wednesday in Tarragona under an international arrest warrant.

He will appear before a judge in Madrid, who will decide on his extradition, they said.

Ukraine’s security services yesterday said there was reason to believe Mr Shariy “was acting on behalf of foreign entities”.

Mr Shariy has been a vocal and active critic of Ukraine’s government.

On Tuesday, he tweeted that he had been warned that Ukrainian intelligence was trying to track him down.
