Outcry over 49ft phone mast plan at Fairy Pools Quotes of the day

IT is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinatio­ns and was recently named one of the best places to swim in the world. But a row has broken out over a planning applicatio­n for a 49ft mobile phone mast at the car park of the Fairy Pools, on the Isle of Skye. The world-famous tourist destinatio­n is a series of waterfalls and pools in Glenbrittl­e, popular with wild swimmers and sightseers. Phone company EE has now submitted a planning applicatio­n to Highland Council for the mast, two antennas, two transmissi­on dishes, a satellite dish and two equipment cabinets.

“WHO the hell wrote this script?” Prince Charles exclaimed as he read a very Royal reading of the weather for BBC Scotland this week. The bulletin, a popular success for BBC Scotland with more than 1.8 million hits on the video clip of the performanc­e, was actually penned by the corporatio­n’s weather forecaster Christophe­r Blanchett. However, the Reporting Scotland team did not think that the heir to the throne and his wife, Camilla, would be “totally game” for the idea of the weather report, which featured special references to houses of interest to the Duke of Rothesay including Balmoral, Dumfries House and the Castle of Mey in Caithness.

AN L S Lowry work which features Glasgow’s dockland and has not been seen in public in more than 30 years is to go on show in Scotland during the next 10 days. The oil painting Cranes and Ships, Glasgow Docks, painted in 1947, is expected to fetch between £50,000 and £80,000 when it goes under the hammer in London next month. It depicts the activity and industry of the docks contrastin­g the height of the vast cranes and ships with the people below. Lowry visited Scotland in 1946 and 1947 and during his trips North executed a series of working drawings of Princes Dock in order to research and observe Glasgow’s industrial life.

THE rail work-to-rule began at midnight as the Industrial Relations Court sat to hear the Government’s applicatio­n for a ballot of union members. Shortly after the overtime ban and other industrial action began officially, the Court adjourned without a decision until 1.30 p.m. today. The applicatio­n for a ballot was lodged by Mr Maurice Macmillan, Secretary of State for Employment, about 6 p.m., and the Court met at 8.30 p.m.

THE Government’s request for a ballot of the membership of the three unions was put by Sir Geoffrey Howe, Solicitor General. It will take a minimum of two weeks to complete, and must be completed within 21 days.

THE annual inspection of the 76th Glasgow (Cadet) Company the Boys’ Brigade (Hillhead Baptist Church Partick Mission) was held last night in the 5th Cameronian’s (Scottish Rifles) Drill Hall. There was a large attendance of parents and friends, and, in addition to the large and representa­tive turnout of members, a notable feature was the parade of ex-members, of whom 250 were present. Lieutenant-colonel James A. Rose presided. Lieutenant-colonel Norman Macleod; the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlander­s, was the inspecting officer, and Lieutenant L. S. Morrison, 5th H. L. I. was his aide-de-camp.
