A spectacular display of royal robes has been unveiled at the childhood home of the Queen Mother. Glamis Castle has been lent dresses, robes and coronets worn at the coronation of George VI and Elizabeth of Glamis at Westminster Abbey on May 12, 1937. Mary, Dowager Countess of Strathmore opened the exhibition, welcoming guests including Lord Airlie, who was a page that day and, with Her Majesty, is one of the last surviving members of the royal procession.

A list of battlefields is to be expanded to include a third group of new sites. The Inventory of Historic Battlefields, managed by Historic Scotland, was set up to catalogue and preserve sites of conflict. The new group of battlefields, compiled after extensive archaeological work to check their importance, ranges from the Borders to the Highlands. Among new sites to be listed are Dunkeld, where Jacobite rebels met defeat in 1689.

Today’s Queen’s Speech, the first to be set out by a Labour Government for 18 years, will reveal a huge legislative programme for the Government, including the necessary legislation for a Scottish Parliament. The Referendum Bill, which will be published later this week, will allow referendums in Scotland and Wales. The Prime Minister intends the Bill to have progress through all its parliamentary stages by the summer.
