Chaplin’s trilby up for auction

-

AN auction house is selling the hat Charlie Chaplin wore in real life – a white trilby.

Actor Chaplin is famous for wearing a black bowler on screen but in real life favoured a different style.

He often wore his white trilby, particularly while relaxing at his holiday home in Laguna, California.

For a time it was owned by Chaplin’s granddaughter and fellow film star Oona Chaplin.

The hat eventually passed into the hands of the now owners after the house was sold.

Having passed between several private collectors, the hat is now once again up for grabs and is expected to fetch more than £2,500 at auction on May 27.

Auctioneer Andrew Stowe, from East Bristol Auctions, said: “Fans are eager to get a piece from their favourite movie star – and Chaplin is the ultimate movie star.”
