The owners of a 17,000-tonne oil rig that ran aground on the coast of Lewis have paid out £400,000 to the coastguard for its operation as a result of the incident. Transocean Winner ran aground at Dalmore last August year after being detached from its tug in a storm. Owners Transocean have paid the huge bill in settlement to the Maritime and Coastguard agency for costs, including surveillan­ce flights and a helicopter to move people on to the grounded rig.

The death of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, almost three years after his release from a Scottish jail, should not stop the search for the truth about the Lockerbie bombing, victims’ families and politician­s insisted last night.

The Libyan’s son, Khaled, announced the death of the 60-year-old at his home in Tripoli yesterday, several days after he is understood to have slipped into a coma.

A Good Samaritan came to the rescue of a stranded hillwalker on a remote mountainsi­de when he took off his kilt and wrapped it round the shivering man. Andy Young, 43, braved the elements as he stripped down and used his kilt and thick cotton shirt to keep the hypothermi­c man warm. Mr Young cuddled up close to Tom Mitchell, 41, and sang him traditiona­l Scottish songs for two hours on Sron Ghorm, Wester Ross, before a helicopter arrived.
