FOUR OF THE BEST
Live Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup BBC2, 7pm
The decision to host the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments at the same time seems to have paid off, with each version receiving a boost in popularity from the others. Now the first of the three finals is set to take place at Manchester’s Central Convention Complex, which is a far cry from the venue’s previous use
– as a temporary NHS Nightingale Hospital during the pandemic.
France are the reigning champions of this wonderfully inclusive version of the sport, having narrowly beaten England last time out. JJ Chalmers hosts the coverage.
Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out Channel 5, 8pm
The comedian and Helen, her trusty campervan, are heading back to God’s own county, Yorkshire. It’s not their first visit, but it’s certainly one of their favourite places – and there are plenty of places they haven’t explored yet, something that Susan wants to put right as soon as possible. She’s particularly keen to visit Oakworth Station, which still operates as part of the Keighley & Worth Valley steam railway line; it also provided one of the locations for the classic 1970 film The Railway Children. After feeling the pressure of changing the signals, she enjoys a rather less stressful time at Shibden Hall, once home of the trailblazing Anne Lister, whose diaries inspired the BBC drama Gentleman Jack.
QI BBC2, 10pm
Animals beginning with the letter T are supposedly the focus of the latest edition, although as regular viewers know, it’s just a starting point for often long, rambling arguments and observations, as well as the odd bit of showing off from the assembled guests. This week, those desperate to impress host Sandi Toksvig and regular panelist Alan Davies are Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham, Desiree Burch, who can be seen in Channel 4’s new sitcom The Horne Section TV Show, and comedian and singer Jason Manford, who’s also presenting Children in Need tonight.
The Last Leg Channel 4, 10pm
It’s a brave TV scheduler who lines up a new series against the ratings juggernaut that is Children in Need, but that’s exactly what somebody at Channel 4 has done. They probably believed that the tongue-in-cheek look back at the week’s news has such a loyal following that they’ll be tuning in come what may – and they might be right. The show continues to be a major success for the broadcaster, so it should be no surprise to see it back for its 26th run. Tonight, Adam Hills, Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker are joined by Peter Crouch, AJ Odudu and Rose Ayling–ellis.
