First glimpse of Glasgow on silver screen as Indy backdrop

- By Martha Vaughan

SCENES from the new Indiana Jones movie which was partly filmed in Glasgow have been seen for the first time.

The city was dressed up as an American street during filming for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in summer 2021.

A new trailer shows action sequences, including 80-year-old Harrison Ford riding a horse through New York City and on to a subway line in an action scene.

The horseback chase was filmed in Glasgow where a body double for Ford was seen riding through a parade scene.

The body double was spotted filming the scenes around Glasgow’s Renfield Street, St Vincent Street and West Nile Street in July 2021.

In a set built over the course of the month, the city’s streets were transformed into 1960s New York.

Glasgow city centre was almost unrecognisable in the trailer with starspangled banners, bunting and vintage shopfronts on display.

Other scenes in the trailer show a younger, de-aged version of the worldfamous fictional archaeologist as well as high-speed car chases and multiple shoot-outs.

Ford reprised his role as the iconic adventurer Indiana Jones more than 40 years after first playing the character in Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981.

The cast also includes Mads Mikkelsen and Antonio Banderas, while Phoebe Waller-bridge plays Indy’s goddaughter, Helena.

In the trailer, Jones is heard saying: “I don’t believe in magic, but a few times in my life I’ve seen things, things I can’t explain.

“And I’ve come to believe it’s not so much what you believe, it’s how hard you believe it.”

During shooting, there were hints of the plot visible to Scottish passers-by.

For instance, during the parade one placard read: “New York welcomes Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins”– a reference to the Apollo 11 astronauts who were the first humans to land on the moon in 1969.

Other vintage shopfronts could be seen with “welcome home” banners in the window.

The film will be released on June 30 next year and follows earlier instalments Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984); Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008).

Scots were delighted to spot Glasgow’s streets in the teaser for the much-anticipated film.

Legal firm Cloch Solicitors tweeted: “Good to see our office neighbourhood feature in the new Indiana Jones 5 trailer.”

Gary Painter posted: “18 months after watching them shoot those scenes, it’s only seeing them in the flesh that I can convince myself that Glasgow features so prominently in an Indiana Jones movie (albeit masquerading as elsewhere!).”

Jamie Milne wrote: “Glasgow looking great in the Indiana Jones trailer. I’m hyped.”

Besides Glasgow, the new instalment of Indy adventures was shot in England, Italy and Morocco.

Last month a guide to film locations in Scotland was launched including the James Bond movies and the hit TV drama Outlander.

The Glenfinnan Viaduct, near Fort William, which featured in Harry Potter and the epic drive through Glen Etive in 007 flick Skyfall have become iconic locations due to their prominence on the big screen.

Actor James Cosmo contributed to the new Visitscotland guide book, Set in Scotland. Cosmo, who is known for roles in Highlander, Braveheart and Trainspotting as well as Game of Thrones, described a “magical quality” to locations.

The 52-page guide features more than 150 films which have been shot entirely or partially in Scotland – 46 more than the previous version first published in 2015 – and details more than 100 film locations.

Previous research has shown that 17 per cent of visitors from Scotland’s top international markets – USA, France and Germany – visit a film or TV location while on holiday in Scotland.

A recent Screen Scotland report valued movie tourism at £55 million to the national economy, creating 1220 full-time jobs.

Scotland has appeared in five of the top 30 highest grossing films of all time, which have brought in a total of $10.6 billion (£9.3bn) at the box office
