Scotland deserves much better

-

WHETHER the Scottish nationalists like it or not, there is not a majority of voters in favour of independence. It has been said that Scottish politics has been in a bit of a turmoil for some time now, especially following the 2014 referendum on the question of independence.

But the SNP proved to be extremely bad losers in this contest when the verdict was 55 per cent in favour of the status quo. Alex Salmond immediately resigned – and Nicola Sturgeon has gone on bleating about it ever since.

Holyrood was created with the blessing of Westminster to deal with a range of government functions at a regional level as were similar local parliaments in Wales and Northern Ireland.

But unfortunately the SNP has never really got over the fact that the majority of Scots rejected their cause, and enmity has continued towards Westminster ever since. Attempts have been made to undermine the overall authority of Westminster over constitutional matters, without success.

In truth the concept of creating a regional parliament in Edinburgh has been a failure. It has led to continuous bitterness between the minority SNP administration at Holyrood and Westminster in spite of the fact that for more than 300 years we British have been united.

There has certainly not been any improvement in the quality of life in Scotland under the SNP. In fact I would go as far as to say that public services are in the worst state ever under this regime.

Judge for yourselves, fellow Scots, what the current state of our schools, hospitals, public transport facilities, police service, and even the state of our roads is under this hapless administration.

Surely Scotland deserves better. Robert I G Scott, Ceres, Fife.
