Carson signs loan deal with Aston Villa and is backed to step up with England
GARETH BARRY, the Aston Villa captain, believes Scott Carson’s England aspirations can only be enhanced by his move to the Midlands club.
Carson has agreed to join Villa on a season-long loan from Liverpool in a deal costing around £2m, with the former Leeds goalkeeper having spent a similar spell with Charlton last season.
He is expected to make his debut for Villa, who face Liverpool today, in next weekend’s Premier League game at Newcastle and Barry said: “This is a great signing for Aston Villa. Scott is a proven Premier League player and he came close to keeping Charlton up last season when he turned in some excellent performances.
“Scott has also said he wants to be pushing Paul Robinson all the way for a senior England place.
“A full season at Villa playing under Martin O’Neill can only do him the world of good.”
