superb victory. “A lot of people were asking me if Queen’s Club would create a Davis Cup atmosphere and I think they proved everyone wrong,” Murray said. “They were absolutely fantastic. We are going to need their support like that if we are going to get the win.”

The hard work continues today with a doubles that always looked likely to be pivotal, with Richard Gasquet and Nicolas Mahut down to play for France, though they, like Britain, may well change their selections.

“I always want to play but I have also had a long few months and it’s about doing what is best for us to win the tie,” Murray said. “I need to try and be fresh for Sunday but we will chat about it and hopefully I can play.”

British captain Leon Smith said he would check how Murray pulls up this morning before making a final decision but he knows a doubles pair with the top man involved is likely to have the best chance of claiming a point.

“What Andy just did was exceptional,” Smith said. “There was a lot of pressure on him. At 0-1 down you have to get that rubber on the board and he did a great job with that yet again with an inspirational performance.

“He’s a great champion. I thought that second set tie-breaker shows why he’s the player he is. He was immense.”
