Muir powers into native record books

LAURA MUIR smashed her lifetime best in the 1500 metres at the Diamond League in Monaco last night with the second-quickest run ever by a Briton.

The 22-year-old Scot ended up fifth in a Scottish record of 3:58.66 – breaking the four-minute mark for the first time – but was left trailing Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba who shattered the world record with a time of 3:50.07.

Mo Farah was beaten into fourth in the men’s 1500m, just missing his own European record, as Kenya’s Asbel Kiprop won in 3:26.69, the quickest time since 2001.

Elsewhere, Scottish prospect Mhairi Hendry was the fourth fastest qualifier for tonight’s 800m final at European Junior Championsh­ips in Sweden with Josh Kerr coasting into the 1500m final.
