He was 66 at the time. 1965 Former light-heavyweight champion Freddie Mills was found shot dead in his car in Soho, London. A verdict of suicide was recorded. 1992 A record 172 nations were represented at the Olympic Games, which opened in Barcelona. 1997 Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers of all time, died aged 84. He was the first man to win three majors in a calendar year (1953) and was only denied the chance of a fourth because the Open Championship and US PGA overlapped. 1999 Lance Armstrong won his first Tour de France. He would go on to win a record seven straight titles but was later stripped of them all for doping offences.
