1914 WG Grace scored 69 not out for Eltham against Grove Park in his last cricket match. He was 66 at the time. 1965 For­mer light-heavy­weight cham­pion Fred­die Mills was found shot dead in his car in Soho, Lon­don. A ver­dict of sui­cide was recorded. 1992 A record 172 na­tions were rep­re­sented at the Olympic Games, which opened in Barcelona. 1997 Ben Ho­gan, one of the great­est golfers of all time, died aged 84. He was the first man to win three ma­jors in a cal­en­dar year (1953) and was only de­nied the chance of a fourth be­cause the Open Cham­pi­onship and US PGA over­lapped. 1999 Lance Armstrong won his first Tour de France. He would go on to win a record seven straight ti­tles but was later stripped of them all for dop­ing of­fences.
