The Herald - Herald Sport - - UPDATE - MARK WOODS

BOROUGHMUIR Blaze completed a remarkable return to the top of domestic basketball by lifting the Scottish Playoff crown with a 76-71 win over Edinburgh University.

Blaze forward Tomas Cicenas had 22 points and 13 rebounds as his side, who last month took the league for the first time in 36 years, completed the double.

The hosts trailed 34-29 at half-time but found their rhythm in the third quarter. But Boroughmuir proved obstinate and finished in confident style to end their season on a high.

Edinburgh University’s women polished off an unbeaten campaign by thrashing Edinburgh Kool Kats 78-58 in their play-off final behind Sarah Halejian’s haul of 20 points and 11 rebounds.

The ambitious capital outfit, who also added the Scottish Cup, will consider accepting a promotion into the Women’s British Basketball League next term. And they underlined their position as a class above the chasing pack by outscoring Kool Kats 20-10 in the third period to build an insurmountable cushion.

In the BBL, Neil Watson hit a decisive three-pointer with six seconds left as title-chasing Leicester Riders avoided a shock by scraping past London Lions 77-76 to close within six points of leaders Newcastle Eagles with four games still in hand. Plymouth Raiders tightened their group on a playoff spot with a 91-72 win over ailing Bristol Flyers.
