“We’ve been on really good form since Christmas, and one setback doesn’t make us a bad team,” he said. “We’ve had a really tough draw in the cup, against Premiershi­p opposition away from home all the way through, so the boys have been focused for that.

“You’ve got to be honest enough with yourself at times and say that something just wasn’t good enough, and the second game against Ayr was a bit of a car crash – you just can’t give away a lead like that and play like we did against a class team. We’ve parked that.

“In the first game we beat Ayr and we played pretty well, but there was still a lot of things we could have improved on. The good thing to come out of the whole experience was the real honesty afterwards – we reviewed the game pretty thoroughly and the boys could see that there were things there that you just can’t do when you play the likes of Ayr … or Heriot’s for that matter.

“We’ve had some really good results against both those teams. I’m pretty confident that the boys will bounce back this weekend.”

The cup final kicks off at 5.45pm and is the culminatio­n of a day of knockout rugby at the national stadium. Millbrae and Aberdeen University meet in the final of the Bowl, which kicks off at 11am, and Highland and Carrick contest the Shield final at 1.15pm.
